A local charity in Exminster is cultivating more than just fresh produce thanks to a new partnership aimed at boosting community wellbeing.
Westbank Community Health and Care has begun the next phase of redeveloping its Community Allotment behind the Healthy Living Centre on Farm House Rise, with support from Jack’s Patch, part of Otter Garden Centres.
The Bishopsteignton-based garden centre is now working alongside Westbank to transform the space into a thriving allotment that will supply food for the charity’s Community Cookery School and its two Community Larders, which support local families.

The project is designed to create a welcoming outdoor space for people of all ages and abilities, improving physical health, mental wellbeing and social connection. The allotment has already had major groundwork completed thanks to volunteers from Kier Construction, who helped level the area and install an accessible pathway suitable for wheelchair users.
Jack’s Patch is leading Phase Two, bringing their gardening expertise and resources to help get the allotment growing. Their team has already visited the site several times, pruning, weeding and preparing the Sensory Garden for winter.
Katie Elliott, Westbank’s Head of Fundraising and Marketing, said the support has been invaluable: “We’re absolutely delighted to be developing a partnership with Jack’s Patch. They’re helping us understand what’s already growing, how to look after it, and how to make the most of the space. They’ve also donated plants, seeds, planters, plant food, fencing, sleepers for raised beds and even an arbour for people to sit and enjoy.”
Jack’s Patch has also offered to help maintain the rest of Westbank’s gardens, including the Sensory Garden and raised beds, to keep them looking welcoming for visitors and service users.
Branch Manager Emma Devonald said the team is passionate about being involved: “This is a project we were keen to support for the long term. We know how valuable access to green spaces can be for wellbeing, and we hope everyone involved in the community allotment gains a real sense of joy from it.”
Regular updates on the allotment’s progress will be shared on Westbank’s social media. A plaque will also be placed on site to recognise Jack’s Patch’s contribution.
Westbank volunteers meet at the allotment every Friday and the charity is warmly welcoming more local people to get involved, whether they’re experienced gardeners or complete beginners.
