A craft shop in Exeter is celebrating its sixth birthday this month, marking six years as a hub for creativity and community in the city.

Founded in 2019 by local maker and shop owner Sonya Ellis, Exeter Craft Hub has grown from a small idea into a thriving community hub, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds to share skills, make art, and find friendship.

For Sonya, the heart of the Hub has never been about selling crafts alone but about creating a space where everyone feels welcome.

She said: "The whole ethos is about having somewhere where people feel safe, somewhere where local people can make things and sell in a high street area and just being a really friendly, safe space for everyone, the Hub is very much community-driven."

"I just like the positive vibes and it's all about safety and being kind," she said. "From the start, I wanted the Hub to be somewhere people could relax, feel supported and enjoy themselves without pressure."

For Sonya, one of her favourite things about running the Hub has been watching her dog, Orsa, win hearts. The friendly maremma mountain dog has her own "fan club" among customers, who regularly pop in just to say hello.

Sonya admits that Orsa is a "big drive for the shop" and admits that many regulars see her as much a part of the Hub as the crafts themselves.

Visitors say the Hub is a lifeline, offering both creative opportunities and companionship. But Sonya stresses that keeping spaces like this alive depends on the wider community.

By buying handmade items from the Hub, supporting its workshops, or simply spreading the word, locals can help ensure the Craft Hub continues to thrive.

She also believes its location on Sidwell Street is important. “It matters having places like this in the heart of the city,” she explained.

“We need to support the positive elements of Exeter."

"The Hub is proof that kindness, creativity and community spirit can bring real value to our high street.”

Looking ahead, Exeter Craft Hub plans to expand its programme of workshops and community projects, but Sonya insists the focus will remain on kindness, inclusivity and the joy of making things together.

The Exeter Craft Hub has marked its sixth birthday with balloons, decorations and of course, a chance to meet Orsa!
