Exeter is set to embrace the spirit of Bavaria this October as the city hosts its own Oktoberfest celebration, bringing the sights, sounds, and flavours of the famous German festival to Castle Street.

Oktoberfest, the world-famous Bavarian festival of beer, food, and music, is making its mark in Exeter this month, bringing a taste of Germany to the city.

Traditionally held in Munich, Germany, Oktoberfest has become a global celebration, known for its large steins of beer, hearty Bavarian dishes, folk music, and festive atmosphere.

The festival originated in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen.

Today, Oktoberfest is as much about community and cultural traditions as it is about beer, drawing visitors of all ages to enjoy the food, music, and carnival-style celebrations.

In Exeter, the Oktoberfest spirit will be brought to life on Castle Street on Saturday, 18 October, with local vendors serving German-inspired cuisine, live music, and family-friendly entertainment. There will a daytime event running from 12pm - 5pm and an evening event running from 6pm - 11pm.

Organisers, Exeter Castle, said that the "event offers a vibrant atmosphere with themed decor, long communal tables, with plenty of dancing and singing.

It's going to be a fun and immersive Oktoberfest experience in the heart of Exeter. There will be a live oompah band, games and fantastic German inspired food."

Visitors can expect classic Oktoberfest staples such as pretzels, bratwurst, sauerkraut, and, of course, German beer, alongside live performances featuring Bavarian folk music and traditional dancing.

Many locals are looking forward to experiencing the festival’s festive atmosphere, which combines food, music, and community celebration.

Local resident Emma Clarke said, “It’s great to see something so iconic coming to Exeter. We love trying new food and celebrating cultural events, and Oktoberfest has that mix of fun, music, and tradition.”

Another Exeter resident, Sarah Williams, said that "events like this bring people together, give local businesses a real boost and create such a fun atmosphere for families and friends."

While Exeter’s version is smaller than Munich’s famous festival, it captures the essence of Bavarian hospitality, community spirit, and fun.

The Castle Street celebration offers residents a chance to enjoy a global tradition without leaving the city and provides an opportunity for families, friends, and visitors to come together over food, music, and cultural experiences.

Tickets and more information about the event are available through local event listings, with organisers encouraging attendees to book early to avoid disappointment.
