Devon County Council has launched a public consultation on proposed changed to Barnfield Road in Exeter.

The scheme, which includes wider pavements, new cycle lanes, raised crossings and a one-way traffic section, is described by Councillor Dan Thomas, Cabinet Member for Highways, as a way to make the route "more accessible, attractive and safe for all."

Supporters say the redesign will create a safer and greener gateway into the city, encouraging more people to walk or cycle.

However, some residents and businesses believe the changes could bring challenges, from longer car journeys and delivery issues to concerns about congestion shifting elsewhere.

Local resident, Nanna Teeg, commented that: "It's a pity the council aren't doing anything at all to improve existing pathways that are extremely dangerous for disabled and elderly people."

Yet, other residents like Maureen Simmonds and Margaret Peat said that this "sounds like a fantastic project" and that "action is definitely needed" as it is currently "one of the most dangerous junctions in Exeter for pedestrians and cyclists."

Barnfield Road runs between Princesshay and Denmark Road, crossing Western Way and cutting through Southernhay.

As part of the E3 and E9 cycle routes, it is used by over 2,000 pedestrians and 500 cyclists each day, connecting schools, workplaces and shops with the city centre.

Devon County Council says redesigning the road will make it safer, more welcoming and create a greener gateway into Exeter.

The proposals include wider pavements to improve space for buggies, wheelchairs and scooters, safer cycle lanes in both directions, raised pedestrian crossings to give people priority, and a one-way westbound flow between Western Way and Barnfield Crescent to reduce noise and traffic.

The scheme is being developed in phases, with the first section between Princesshay and Western Way already designed and funded.

It will also link with Exeter City Council’s separate project to change access to Princesshay car parks, which is expected to cut traffic levels in Southernhay and Barnfield Road.

Residents, businesses and commuters are now being invited to give their views. The consultation is open until 31 October, with an online survey available at www.devon.cc/barnfield.

A public exhibition will also take place on Tuesday 21 October from 11.30am to 6.30pm at the west end of Bedford Street in Princesshay, outside Debenhams.
