Free courses available to help Devon adults boost skills and careers

People can access training online and at locations across Devon, including Bideford, Ilfracombe and Exmouth
Hundreds of free adult education courses are being made available to residents across Devon this autumn through Learn Devon.
The adult education service, run by Devon County Council, has launched its latest programme of around 200 courses designed to help people gain new skills, improve their employment prospects, or progress in their current careers.
Courses cover a wide range of subjects, including English, maths, digital skills and IT, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), as well as skills development and community engagement programmes.
Devon County Council says the courses are intended to provide flexible learning opportunities for adults, helping them gain qualifications and practical skills that are increasingly important in the workplace.
Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, the council’s Cabinet Member responsible for adult education, said Learn Devon offers a variety of learning options to make education more accessible.
She said: “Whether it’s building confidence with technology, learning functional skills of English and Maths, or studying for a GCSE, Learn Devon may have a course to suit your needs.”
Among the courses starting this month are free online GCSE English and GCSE maths programmes beginning on September 8. Other opportunities include a Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene course from September 10 and a Level 2 Certificate in Health and Social Care starting on September 11.
A number of digital skills and IT courses will also be available in locations including Bideford, Exmouth, Newton Abbot and Tavistock, while an online cybersecurity qualification is being offered.
Residents looking to improve their English language skills can enrol on free ESOL courses, which support learners in developing speaking, reading, writing and listening skills. These courses will be delivered in Exmouth, Ilfracombe, Newton Abbot and Exeter from September 9.
Learn Devon’s advisers are available to help adults who are considering returning to education, choosing a course or qualification, or planning their next steps in learning and employment.
More information about available courses and enrolment can be found on the Learn Devon website.
