Statement win for Exeter City in Sky Bet League Two

Exeter City delivered a confident performance to end Crewe Alexandra’s unbeaten start to the League Two season, securing a deserved 2-0 victory at St James Park.

Anthony Scully’s first-half penalty gave the Grecians the lead before Reece Cole struck in stoppage time to seal all three points, lifting Exeter into the top half of the table for the first time this season.

Crewe arrived in Devon having won five and drawn six of their opening 11 league fixtures, but Exeter’s energetic first-half display ensured the visitors’ impressive run came to an end.

The Grecians started brightly, putting the Crewe defence under sustained pressure. Charlie Cummins tested goalkeeper Tom Booth with a powerful effort, while fellow academy graduate George Birch proved a constant threat in the attacking areas.

Birch’s positive approach was rewarded in the 21st minute when he was brought down inside the penalty area by Joe White. Scully stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick and confidently converted to put Exeter ahead.

The hosts continued to dictate the tempo and came close to extending their advantage when Cummins curled a shot narrowly wide from an acute angle.

Crewe struggled to create clear opportunities during the opening period, although Jordan Gibson offered a reminder of their attacking threat with an effort from around 20 yards that failed to find the target.

The visitors emerged with renewed determination after the interval and began to put Exeter under greater pressure. Gibson and Matus Holicek both tested Jack Bycroft, but the Grecians goalkeeper stood firm to preserve his side’s advantage.

Despite Crewe’s improved second-half showing, Exeter’s defensive resilience proved decisive. The Grecians have now conceded just six goals in their opening 12 league matches, underlining the solidity that has become a key feature of their campaign.

As the visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Exeter remained disciplined and waited for an opportunity to put the contest beyond reach.

That moment arrived in stoppage time when Cole won possession near the touchline. With Crewe committing players forward, the midfielder found himself with plenty of space to drive towards goal before unleashing a powerful finish to make it 2-0 and spark celebrations among the home supporters.

The late strike capped an accomplished afternoon for the Grecians, who combined attacking intent with defensive organisation to overcome one of League Two’s in-form sides.
