Entries open in the search for Exeter’s best autumnal tree photographer

Entries are now open for the seventh annual tree photography competition, with amateur photographers encouraged to capture images of the best autumnal trees in Exeter.
Amateur photographers have three weeks to get snapping as entries open for this year’s tree photography competition.
Exeter City Council, in collaboration with Devon Tree Services, has launched the competition for the seventh year running.
The council says it aims to encourage people of all ages to get out into the city and take a picture of their favourite trees in full autumn bloom.
The person who takes the best snap, as selected by a panel of judges, will win a framed photograph of their picture along with a copy of the photo book ‘A Portrait of the Tree’ by Adrian Houston.
The runner-up will also receive a framed photograph of their image.
Budding photographers under 16 can enter the junior category and compete for the same prizes.
Councillor Duncan Wood said: “It’s great to see the competition back once again. We love trees and so do the people of Exeter and this competition always proves so popular with around 100 entries every year - with some stunning images!
“Thanks to Devon Tree Services, we have another set of terrific prizes up for grabs and I can’t wait to see all the images this autumn. The competition really gives us an idea of the most treasured trees in Exeter.”
The competition is open to all amateur photographers, not just those living in Exeter, but any photos entered must include a tree in the city.
Simple shots, selfies, “arty” black and white images, and fun snaps of friends and family are all encouraged.
Entries must be clearly marked ‘ECC Tree Photo Competition’ and include the entrant’s name, age, an accurate location of the tree, and the date the shot was taken.
Only images taken after October 1 2026 can be submitted, and images submitted for previous competitions will not be accepted. Photographers can enter a maximum of two photos.
The competition closes Monday, November 9, in time for National Tree Week - which runs from November 21 to 29.
National Tree Week, organised by registered charity The Tree Council, marks the start of the winter tree planting season.
The charity aims to bring people together to raise awareness of the role trees play in our lives. Nature lovers up and down the country will spend the week planting thousands of trees and hedgerows.
