Celebrating a Life of Compassion: Exeter’s Mic Morgan Leaves Lasting Gift to Support Global Education

A much-loved member of Exeter’s St Thomas community has been remembered not only for a lifetime of service, but for a final act of generosity that will continue to benefit young people across Devon.

Devon Development Education (DDE) has announced that former trustee Mic Morgan, who died recently, left a £2,000 legacy gift to support the charity’s work promoting global learning, social justice and intercultural understanding.

For a city with a strong tradition of community activism and international outlook, Mic’s life and legacy reflect values that resonate deeply in Exeter today.

A long-standing member of the St Thomas community and a committed Quaker, Mic Morgan led a life shaped by compassion, curiosity and service to others.

His international career began at a young age when he volunteered in a hospital in Swaziland. He later completed an MSc in Nutrition at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, graduating top of his year.

Mic went on to work globally as a nutritionist, including developing a national nutrition strategy in St Kitts with the United Nations and working in Papua New Guinea with Save the Children. After returning to the UK, he retrained in health promotion, working in Portsmouth and London before becoming a lecturer at Oxford Brookes University. During this time, he also qualified as a psychotherapist.

Following the university’s closure, he continued practising as a psychotherapist in Exeter until the Covid lockdown, remaining active and engaged within the local community.

Mic served as a trustee of Devon Development Education from 2015 to 2021. During that time, he was a consistent and thoughtful supporter of the charity’s projects, with a particular enthusiasm for its “Food Glorious Food” initiative. The project enables children to grow and prepare healthy dishes from different cultures, combining practical skills with lessons about diversity, sustainability and global interdependence.

For more than 20 years, Devon Development Education has worked with schools, educators and community groups across Devon and Cornwall, encouraging global awareness and responsible citizenship. Its programmes aim to help people of all ages explore global issues and celebrate cultural diversity, while developing critical thinking about the wider world.

Operating largely through grants, donations and community fundraising, the charity depends on the generosity of individuals who share its vision of a fairer and more informed society.

By choosing to remember DDE in his estate planning, Mic ensured that his long-standing commitment to learning, diversity and community would continue beyond his lifetime. The £2,000 gift will help sustain educational resources, strengthen community partnerships and support projects that inspire young people across Devon to engage thoughtfully with global challenges.

In a statement, Devon Development Education expressed its gratitude to Mic’s wife, family and friends, thanking them for their support and for helping celebrate “a life so meaningfully lived”.

Those wishing to support the charity can do so by making a donation, taking part in events and workshops, or leaving a gift in their will.
