Exeter-based Living Space Architects has been highly commended at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) South West Building Excellence Awards 2025, recognised for its innovative and sustainable approach to residential design.
The firm, which operates from its base in the city centre, received the commendation in the Best Residential Extension category for its work on the transformation of a family holiday home in Lyme Regis.

The project involved a complete renovation and sustainable upgrade, incorporating a new garden room built into the hillside, a glazed snug to maximise sea views, and a green roof that blends the property with its natural surroundings.
The work also focused on improving energy efficiency through high levels of insulation, an air source heat pump, and a solar photovoltaic system with battery storage.
Architect Ellen Sinclair Harris said the award highlighted the practice’s commitment to sustainable and thoughtful design: “We’re delighted that our energy-efficient upgrade to this family home has been recognised by LABC South West. Our goal is always to create designs that are both innovative and in harmony with their environment.”
Living Space Architects, founded in Exeter nearly two decades ago, has built a reputation for combining modern design with environmental responsibility, often working on residential, heritage and community projects across Devon and the wider South West.
The recognition reinforces Exeter’s growing reputation as a hub for sustainable architecture and design innovation, with local firms like Living Space contributing to greener development and energy-efficient building practices across the region.
The LABC South West Awards celebrate construction projects that demonstrate excellence in design, sustainability, and collaboration between architects, builders and local authorities. Winners and commendations were announced at a ceremony earlier this month.
