Exeter Corn Exchange will host science broadcaster and author Mark Thompson on Monday 27 October as part of his 10th anniversary UK tour.

The show, Mark’s Spectacular Science Show, was named Best Kids Show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and uses live experiments to demonstrate the properties of matter.

Audiences can expect explosive elephant’s toothpaste, vortex-generating dustbins, and even howling jelly babies.

Mark Thompson, who has written several books and hosted numerous TV and radio shows, said one of his goals is to make science exciting and accessible for children.

Mark is also well known for his appearances on television and radio, as well as his books and podcasts. He has lectured at prestigious institutions including the Royal Astronomical Society, The Royal Institution and the Norwich Science Festival.

A passionate advocate for inspiring young people, Mark’s work ranges from stage shows to podcasts. His latest book, 101 Facts You Didn’t Know About Space, has topped astronomy charts in both the UK and Canada, while his new podcast Cosmic Commerce explores the global space industry, from tourism and innovation to safety and security.

Mark, who first trained as an astronomer and went on to broadcast on channels such as the BBC and ITV, said the Exeter show is all about sparking curiosity: "You think science is boring? Think again!

This is science like you've never seen it before. It's about inspiring the next generation and showing families that science can be exciting, magical and fun."

Anna, mother of two children from Heavitree, said: "Half-term can be tricky to fill with activities that are both fun and educational. A show like this is perfect! My kids love experiments at home, so to see them live on stage will be amazing."

Experts say engaging children with hands-on science experiences helps develop curiosity, problem-solving skills, and confidence in STEM subjects.

The Exeter show is one of dozens on the show's nationwide anniversary tour, bringing live science demonstrations to towns and cities across the UK.

The Exeter date coincides with the start of the October half-term, offering a family-friendly activity that combines learning with entertainment.

Tickets for the 2:30pm performance are on sale via the Exeter Corn Exchange website: exetercornexchange.co.uk.
