INTERVIEW: Lou Sanders reveals her 7 Deadly Sins
Stand-up comedian, writer, and podcaster Lou Sanders is bringing her latest show, No Kissing in the Bingo Hall, to Exeter Northcott Theatre on 25 April. A familiar face on TV, she’s been the champion of Taskmaster, a star of Dancing on Ice, the co-host of Mel Giedroyc’s Unforgivable and, most recently, starred in the hilarious Last One Laughing.
Ahead of her gig in Exeter this month, we ask her about her seven deadly sins...
LUST: Who or what do you find yourself lusting after today and why?
Lust is such a good word and such an unpleasant feeling - it can drive a lady crazy but I don’t think I’ve lusted for a while. I’ve got my lust on lock down, which is the name of my new r&b track. Lust on Lock Down.
GREED: What should you be cutting down on (non food or drink) and why?
Ultra processed foods, I know I should - I read the book, or at least half of it. And sugar - its the diabetes of the brain (is what I tell my God Daughter at Christmas haha). I used to cheat on veganism and eat clams because I justified in my mind that they didn’t have a face and now I find out they have teeth and eyes for goodness sakes. Well, that’s the sort of thing they should be putting on display - advertise that crap you silly old clams. Haven’t touched one since to be fair.
GLUTTONY: What one thing could you happily eat or drink until you burst, and why?
I love to eat and drink I really do. I love tasting menus. I love things that are creamy and cheesy and decadent and rich - vegan versions of things. I love truffle chocolate and spaghetti bolognaise and vegetables oozing with salt and oil. Oh my God, I am lusting - I’m lusting over a vegetable bake.
SLOTH: What should you be putting your back into now and why?
My jumper. My dinner and my bed. Nah, so much stuff but I feel so divided there’s always so much to do. Whose got the time for all of it. What can I cut out to make some time? I need to have a cull of something.
WRATH: Who or what makes you angry and why?
I think its people doing a bad job and then making you feel like its your fault. I don’t know I try not to get angry but sometimes I do clench my fists and stomp my feet around. My friend only has one emotion and its anger. The thing is when you get angry you feel a bit silly after and you want to take it all back. No one takes an angry bugger seriously. It's kind of embarrassing but then it can also drive you. I’m actually angry now that I am not generally angry enough.
ENVY: Who are you jealous of and why?
Hmmm...I sometimes get a bit green eyed when people are naturally talented - they can speak four languages and have a nice mum and dad who are still alive and they go skiing as a family, for example. That sounds very specific but it’s a person I’ve just invented. Also, dig around long enough and everyone’s got something. Enviousness is nicer because it makes you think ok, I want that thing so I should use that uncomfortable feeling to excel. But no way am I going to learn one more language let alone three.
PRIDE: What’s your proudest achievement and why?
I got a Blue Peter badge when I was about seven so that’s up there. That and my book.
Lou Sanders will be performing at Exeter Northcott Theatre at 7.30pm on 25 April a Exeter Northcott Theatre; exeternorthcott.co.uk
