New Stagecoach engineering chief to steer South West’s electric future

Stagecoach South West has appointed Matthew Smith as its new Engineering Director, joining at a pivotal time as the operator prepares to introduce an all-electric fleet across key South West depots including Torbay.

Matt joins from National Express West Midlands, where he has worked since 2017. He previously spent 15 years in the Armed Forces and holds a master’s degree in Engineering Leadership and Management. He brings extensive experience in engineering leadership, project delivery and large-scale EV fleet mobilisation.

Torquay will shortly receive electric vehicles, with Exeter and Barnstaple due to follow in the coming months as the business accelerates its transition to zero-emission operations.

Matthew said: “I couldn’t be joining the business in the South West at a more exciting time. The introduction of electric vehicles represents a significant step forward, not only in terms of decarbonisation but also in how we support our engineering and operational teams to deliver consistently high standards.

“Successfully integrating EVs is about far more than introducing new vehicles, it requires the right infrastructure, robust planning, strong supplier relationships and a clear focus on reliability from day one.

“Having supported large-scale fleet mobilisation programmes previously, I’m looking forward to working closely with our teams to ensure we deliver this transition safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption to our customers.

“In my first few weeks, I’ve been struck by the professionalism, pride and cohesiveness across the South West operation. There is a strong foundation here, and I’m excited to build on that by embedding a culture of continuous improvement and ensuring we consistently meet the expectations of the communities we serve.”

Peter Knight, Managing Director of Stagecoach South West, said: “Matt joins us at a critical point in our development as we modernise our fleet and invest in our depots across the South West. The transition to electric vehicles requires strong engineering leadership, disciplined programme delivery and a relentless focus on operational performance.

“His background in both the Armed Forces and the bus industry means he understands how to lead teams through complex change while maintaining day-to-day reliability.

“We are confident he will play a key role in embedding a culture of continuous improvement and delivering long-term benefits for our customers and colleagues.”

Originally from the Midlands, Matt has longstanding ties to the South West, having spent time in Devon and Cornwall holidaying. He said the region’s strong community identity and quality of life were key factors in his decision to take up the role.
