Exeter City endured a humbling afternoon at St James’ Park as promotion-chasing Cardiff City swept to a convincing 4–0 victory, leaving the Grecians still looking nervously over their shoulders near the bottom of the League One table.
A devastating three-minute spell in the first half effectively ended the contest, with Rubin Colwill scoring twice to put the visitors firmly in control before Exeter had a chance to settle.
The Grecians began brightly enough but struggled to create clear openings, and Cardiff punished them ruthlessly. Colwill opened the scoring with a powerful strike from a standing start, firing beyond the Exeter goalkeeper to give the Bluebirds the early advantage. Moments later the midfielder struck again, this time rising to head home – an unusual way for him to find the net – to double Cardiff’s lead and stun the home crowd.
Exeter tried to regroup but found it difficult to gain a foothold against a confident Cardiff side pushing hard for automatic promotion. The visitors added a third before the break when Alex Robertson finished off a flowing move that began deep inside his own half. The midfielder stepped forward and unleashed a superb effort from outside the area, leaving the Grecians with a mountain to climb.
One of Exeter’s few moments of real threat came through Sonny Cox, who rattled the woodwork in what briefly raised hopes among the home supporters. But the chance proved only a fleeting highlight in a match largely dominated by the visitors.
Cardiff wrapped up the scoring late on when Callum Robinson calmly guided home from close range, capping a clinical display from the Welsh side.
Interim Exeter boss Matt Taylor had challenged his players before the match to shed a reputation for being “soft”, but the defeat will only reinforce the need for improvement as the Grecians continue their fight to stay clear of the relegation zone.
With Cardiff firmly in control, large spells of the second half were played at a slow tempo as the visitors comfortably managed the game while Exeter struggled to make meaningful inroads.
The result leaves Cardiff four points behind league leaders Lincoln City and 11 points clear of third-placed Bolton Wanderers as they maintain their push for automatic promotion.
For Exeter, the outlook is more concerning. The Grecians slipped two places to 18th and now sit just four points above the drop zone, with plenty of work still to do in the weeks ahead.
