Jayden Wareham struck a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to earn Exeter City a deserved point against Wycombe Wanderers in an entertaining contest at St James Park, marking a positive start for interim manager Dan Green.
Green took charge of the Grecians following Gary Caldwell’s departure to Wigan earlier in the week and watched his side produce a spirited display, only to be denied victory by a resolute Wycombe defence and a late twist in the tale.
The visitors took the lead against the run of play in the 22nd minute with their first shot on target. Ewan Henderson slipped a precise pass into the path of Fred Onyedinma, who raced beyond goalkeeper Joe Whitworth, rounded him and calmly rolled the ball into an empty net.
Exeter responded strongly and finished the first half on the front foot. Pierce Sweeney went close when he met Ethan Brierley’s cross with a firm header, but Wycombe goalkeeper Will Norris was well positioned to make the save.
The Grecians continued to apply pressure after the break, with Ryan Rydel forcing Norris into another sharp stop with a powerful drive early in the second half. Despite their dominance, Exeter struggled to break down a disciplined Wycombe back line.
Just as five minutes of stoppage time were signalled, the breakthrough finally arrived. Akeel Higgins delivered a pinpoint cross from the right, and Wareham rose to glance a superb header into the far corner, sparking celebrations among the home supporters.
Substitute Timur Tutierov almost completed a remarkable comeback in the dying moments, but his angled effort flashed into the side netting, leaving Exeter to settle for a point that felt hard-earned and fully deserved.
Devon rivals Plymouth Argyle continued their impressive away form with a 3-1 win at Leyton Orient, hot on the heels of a 4-0 trouncing of Blackpool in Lancashire.
