Yellow Warning Weather Map for Exeter - Credit: Met Office
Residents in Exeter are being warned to prepare for heavy rain and potential disruption after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning covering Wednesday 18 February and Thursday 19 February.
The warning highlights spells of heavy rain that could lead to localised flooding and travel disruption across southern parts of England, including Devon.
Forecasters say between 10mm and 20mm of rain is expected quite widely, with some areas near the south coast seeing 20mm to 30mm. Higher ground, including Dartmoor, could see totals of up to 50mm. Strong east to northeasterly winds are also forecast, which may exacerbate impacts in exposed areas.
In Exeter, residents can expect spray and possible surface water flooding on roads, which could make journey times longer. Bus and train services may also be affected, with delays likely during periods of heavier rainfall.
The Met Office has warned that flooding of a small number of homes and businesses is possible, along with potential interruptions to power supplies and other services.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Spells of heavy rain could lead to some flooding and disruption to travel during Wednesday and Thursday. Strong east to northeasterly winds will accompany the rain, which could exacerbate impacts in places.
“This warning has a medium likelihood and a low impact, but people should stay up to date with the forecast as conditions can change quickly.”
The warning also notes that snow is possible over higher ground, chiefly during Wednesday night, though no significant snowfall is expected at lower levels in Exeter.
Large waves could affect some east-facing coasts along the English Channel, although coastal impacts are expected to be more significant further south and east.
The Met Office is advising people to check whether their property could be at risk of flooding and, if so, to prepare a flood plan and emergency flood kit.
Those travelling are urged to check road conditions before setting off and to monitor bus and rail timetables in case of delays. Drivers are advised to take extra care in wet conditions, allowing more time for journeys and leaving greater stopping distances.
Residents are also encouraged to prepare for the possibility of power cuts by ensuring they have torches, spare batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items readily available.
The Met Office says people cope better with disruption when they prepare in advance and recommends monitoring updates as weather warnings can change at short notice.
The yellow warning remains in place throughout Wednesday and into Thursday, with conditions expected to improve later on Thursday as the band of rain clears eastwards.
