Late strike ruled out as City lose away

Magennis was denied a goal

Magennis was denied a goal

Exeter City forward Josh Magennis was left frustrated after seeing a late equaliser ruled out in Saturday’s defeat to Rotherham United.

The Northern Ireland international had the ball in the net just minutes from time, only for the assistant referee’s flag to deny him. A first-half goal for the Millers proved decisive as the Grecians left empty-handed despite a strong second-half display.

“We were trying to build on what we did against Peterborough last week but to concede in such a soft way and then not really right those wrongs is hard to take,” Magennis said after the match. “We managed to take over the game in the second half but it was a little too late. It feels like 90 minutes wasted, a whole week’s preparation wasted. We’ve just got to lick our wounds and look forward next week to Port Vale.”

Magennis admitted City failed to create enough clear chances until late on, with near misses from Sonny Cox and himself alongside the disallowed goal.

“It’s not often we don’t carry a goal threat, but today it just wasn’t enough,” he added.
