Gary Caldwell's team were impressive against Peterborough
Exeter City boss Gary Caldwell praised his side’s “aggressive” and “energetic” display after they swept aside Peterborough United with a convincing 3-0 win at St James Park.
Goals from Jayden Wareham and a quickfire double from Josh Magennis sealed City’s third victory of the season, ensuring the Grecians bounced back in style from last weekend’s defeat.
“I thought we were good from the start,” Caldwell said after the match. “Out of possession we were really aggressive and put in loads of energy in that first half. At 1-0 it’s risky, but in the second half we were more pragmatic in how we pressed and sat in a block more. The understanding of how to win the game was great.”
Caldwell was especially pleased with two second-half strikes that came directly from crosses – a move he revealed had been worked on in training during the week.
“I am delighted with the result and a clean sheet,” he added. “A big part of what we did today was our out of possession work, not just with the defence but also with our four number nines that came on the pitch.”
The victory moves Exeter up the League One table and keeps confidence high ahead of next weekend’s fixtures.
