Big victory for Exeter but Argyle beaten

After all the excitement and drama of a penalty shootout defeat to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup, Exeter City delivered their first league win since Boxing Day with a battling 1-0 triumph at bottom club Cambridge United.

Josh Magennis followed up his impressive brace against Forest with the match-winner on 17 minutes, heading into the corner after a delightful cross from the impressive Caleb Watts.

City had made the brighter start, as Cambridge struggled to find any attacking rhythm. Ed Francis and Ilnari Niskanen both went close for the Grecians but it was home forward Ryan Loft who spurned the best chance, nodding wide with City ‘keeper Joe Whitworth fully exposed.

Josh Stokes also wasted a decent chance for Cambridge early in the second period before a turgid game was decided by the head of Magennis. City are back on the road to Charlton Athletic next weekend.

Plymouth Argyle’s sensational week in the spotlight ended with a frustrating 2-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Pilgrims followed up their amazing win over Liverpool in the FA Cup with a 5-1 trouncing of Millwall at Home Park, but their resolute efforts at Ewood Park were brought down by a first goal in nine years for Adam Forshaw, the midfielder who failed to sparkle in his short spell with Argyle.

The Greens also had to stomach the disappointment of Ryan Hardie, the goalscoring hero against Liverpool, hobbling off in the first period. Forshaw’s moment arrived on 55 minutes, steering a lobbed finish over the tall frame of Conor Hazard.

Argyle had to commit men forward in the search for a leveller but Tyrhys Dolan had the final word for Blackburn, sealing a win that keeps the Pilgrims entrenched in a tough fight against relegation.
