Exeter City will host Barnsley at St James Park this Saturday in their final home game before Christmas, with manager Gary Caldwell urging his side to build momentum following their 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City in the Vertu Trophy on Tuesday night.

Reflecting on the challenge ahead, Caldwell acknowledged Barnsley’s pedigree: “We know how big the task is and how difficult it is going to be. Barnsley are a team who expect to be fighting for promotion every year, and I think this year will be no different.”

Despite the midweek loss, Caldwell found positives in his side’s performance, particularly with a much-changed lineup. He emphasised the team’s recent progress in belief and understanding, even if results have been elusive.

“We’ve learnt a lot in the last few weeks,” he said. “We’ve played Birmingham, Wrexham, Wycombe, and Stockport, and we wanted to see progress. Even though we haven’t got the results, we think we’ve seen progression, even looking at stats alone.”

Caldwell hopes that City can capitalise on their improvement and give fans a performance to remember as the festive season approaches. “Let’s get the place rocking, and we can get a performance and result to send them home happy in preparation for Christmas,” he added.

Gary Caldwell’s words reveal more than just tactical preparation; they paint a picture of a manager balancing ambition with realism. Acknowledging the quality of their opposition, he respects the challenge posed by a promotion-chasing Barnsley side while carefully managing expectations. Despite a string of defeats, Caldwell is keen to emphasise the team’s progress and uses statistics to reinforce his confidence in their direction.

Looking ahead, the manager emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards. “We have to keep focusing on process and performance. If we do that and continue to improve, I’m confident we can win a lot of games between now and the end of the season,” he said.

His call to “get the place rocking” is as much a rallying cry to fans as it is a reminder of how crucial their backing will be during this pivotal moment in the season. Caldwell’s optimism, even in adversity, speaks of a man committed to long-term success, motivating both his players and supporters to stay the course.

As Exeter aim to finish the year on a high note, Caldwell believes the team is building something special, and the players are ready to rise to the occasion.
