Exeter City defender Ben Purrington was pleased with how he and his teammates played despite being knocked out of the Vertu Trophy with a 2-1 defeat to Birmingham.

Ben was brought back into City's starting eleven for the cup fixture, and was pleased with how his side laid into the Blues.

"I think we stuck in for the full game, we gave them a tough game. If we had scored that chance at one each, it was a different game," he said.

"They're a very good side and they've punished us in the end and got the result they wanted."

The Grecians put in a valiant defensive effort, but the visitors took their chances to progress.

Ben added: "We limited them to little, but good teams punish you when you switch off for just a second. We've got to take a lot of positives though from the way we played."
