Exeter City return to Sky Bet League One action this evening at 7:45pm, welcoming an in-form Wycombe Wanderers side to St James Park.
Fresh from a 2-0 FA Cup victory over Chesterfield, the Grecians are eager to maintain their momentum against one of the league's most formidable teams.
Wycombe arrive in Devon riding an incredible 11-match winning streak across all competitions, including a confident 2-0 triumph over Wealdstone in the FA Cup. Their league form has been particularly impressive, with eight consecutive victories producing 17 goals.
Aware of the challenge, Exeter manager Gary Caldwell remains focused on his own side’s performance: “It’s not about what they do, but what we do. If we are at our very best, we know we can cause them a lot of problems.”
Adding to the club’s recent momentum, a youthful Exeter side stormed into the Devon Bowl quarter-finals with an emphatic 11-0 victory over Torquay United. Theo Cutler stole the show with a remarkable six-goal haul, while Kieran Wilson dazzled with several assists and a goal. Goals from Gabe Billington, Tom Dean, Charlie Cummins, and George Birch capped off the rout, providing a confidence boost ahead of their next round trip to Barnstaple.
Exeter will be without Demetri Mitchell, who is side-lined with what Caldwell described as a “minor muscle issue.”
Several players are managing small injuries, but the manager stressed the importance of building on recent performances.
Wycombe, having rested many of their regular starters during their FA Cup tie, but Caldwell sees this as an opportunity: “It can work two ways. They haven’t played much, so they might take time to get going.”
This match also highlights Exeter City’s commitment to social causes. The club is dedicating the evening to the White Ribbon Campaign, part of the 16 Days of Action initiative aimed at ending gender-based violence. Caldwell underscored the importance of raising awareness: “It is really important. At football games, or after football games, the abuse to women can go up, so it is important at a football game to show that solidarity.”
Fans can engage with representatives, sign pledges, and learn about the campaign in the Fan Zone.
At half-time, a video highlighting domestic abuse challenges in Devon will be shown, accompanied by additional information in the matchday program.
For those attending, the Junior Grecians Zone will open at 5pm for members and 6pm for all supporters, with plenty of activities for younger fans. The club shop, open from 9am, offers the latest 24/25 kits, training gear, and memorabilia, with discounts available for members.
The last league meeting between these sides was a memorable Boxing Day clash in 2023. Exeter triumphed 1-0, with Sonny Cox’s second-half goal and Viljami Sinisalo’s last-minute penalty save securing a dramatic win that ended a 13-match winless streak.
Tuesday’s match promises to be a thrilling encounter as Exeter aim to derail Wycombe’s scintillating form and solidify their own resurgence.
With tickets selling quickly, early booking is encouraged to secure a spot for what is sure to be an exciting night under the lights at St James Park.
Finally, fans can look forward to the FA Cup Third Round draw, as Caldwell remarked: “This is when the competition really begins.”
