Exeter City Football Club is taking a powerful stand against gender-based violence by supporting the 16 Days of Action Campaign, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and promoting the prevention of violence against women and girls.

The campaign runs annually from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25) to World Human Rights Day (December 10).

As part of the initiative, Exeter City FC is aligning its efforts with the White Ribbon Campaign, a globally recognized movement dedicated to addressing the root causes of violence against women.

The campaign focuses on challenging harmful gender norms, promoting positive masculinity, and encouraging men to take an active role in preventing violence.

At the Sky Bet League One fixture against Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday, December 3, the club will host organizations dedicated to combating gender-based violence. In the Fan Zone, supporters can:

- Access information and resources on the White Ribbon Campaign.

- Learn how to sign the White Ribbon pledge to stand against violence.

- Engage with representatives from organisations working in this space.

Additionally, a short video addressing domestic abuse challenges in Devon will be shown at half-time, with further details included in the match day program.

Nick Hawker, chair of the club and Exeter City Supporters’ Trust, emphasized the importance of football as a platform for positive change:

“At Exeter City Football Club, we believe that football has the power to inspire change. By supporting the 16 Days of Action campaign, we’re taking a stand to challenge gender-based violence. As a community-owned club, it’s our responsibility to raise awareness and foster conversations that lead to safer, more inclusive environments for everyone. Campaigns like this allow us to harness the influence of football to drive positive societal change, and we’re proud to play a role in this vital initiative. Let’s work together to make our community a safer, more supportive place for everyone.”

This event at St James Park is part of a wider agenda of activities across Devon, aimed at educating the public, providing support, and encouraging advocacy. According to Safer Devon:

- FearFree, the commissioned domestic abuse support service, received 6,000 referrals in Devon last year, with 39% involving repeat cases

- Referrals for support have doubled since pre-COVID levels

- Nationally, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, and 1 in 6 children witness abuse at home.
