Mixed results for Chiefs and City

Mixed results for Chiefs and City

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell hailed his players as 'outstanding' after they secured a much needed home victory against Carlisle United.

Reece Cole and Sonny Cox both netted their second goals of the season to help secure a 2-1 win over the Cumbrians, a victory which lifts City out of the relegation zone.

"From the very start we were outstanding and controlled the game," Gary said.

"From the very first minute, Luke nearly scored with his first touch, and we totally dominated. I thought we added bits second half and scored two goals. It could have been easier, at 2-0 we should kill the game off and should have been three or four. We stood up to onslaught (after Carlisle's goal).

"I'm not too big on league tables, and I spoke to the players after Reading after dropping into the bottom four and that hurts. We're better than that. After every game now, where do you want to be, how do you want to feel?

"It was important we won today, but I also liked the way we won."

Meanwhile the Exeter Chiefs were also entertain at home.

Having come out firing in the first half, an incredibly gritty and hard-worked second half saw Rob Baxter's men defeated at the death by a resurgent Northampton Saints side at Sandy Park.

The sun-bathed the east terrace in warmth on a chilly January day as Exeter Chiefs got their first match of 2024 off to a competitive start.

To the great delight of the home crowd, the first Sandy Park try of the calendar year was a Chiefs one.

Heartbreakingly for the home side, it wasn’t to be enough when the final whistle blew.

Full-time: Chiefs 36 – Saints 42.
