Devon and Cornwall Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision that occurred southbound on M5 near Exeter, on Sunday, January 25.
Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway between junction 28 at Cullompton and junction 29 near Exeter at around 7.30am on Sunday 25 January, following a collision involving two vehicles.
The motorway was closed while police, South West Ambulance Service and National Highways officers worked at the scene.
Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that a man remains in hospital with injuries described as potentially life-threatening.
Officers said a silver BMW collided with the central reservation, leaving the driver, a man in his 20s, seriously injured. A passenger in the vehicle sustained minor injuries.
Police confirmed that a second vehicle, a silver Mercedes, later collided with the central reservation after striking debris left on the carriageway. The driver of that vehicle also sustained minor injuries.
The southbound carriageway was closed to allow emergency services to respond safely, with National Highways traffic officers putting traffic management measures in place.
Traffic England cameras showed a largely empty stretch of motorway during the closure, with significant disruption to morning journeys around Exeter and East Devon.
As enquiries continue, officers from the Roads Policing Team are urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or who was travelling on the M5 southbound at the time, to come forward.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Anyone with any relevant information or dash-cam footage which may assist the investigation is asked to contact police via our website or by calling 101, quoting log 0162 of 25 January 2026.”
Police have also thanked motorists for their patience while the road was closed.
