Petroc College students creating baubles for the Trees of Hope
You may have noticed an enchanting addition to Exeter’s city centre this past week: Christmas trees shimmering with handmade baubles in Princesshay.
But this isn’t just any festive decoration. Dubbed the ‘Christmas Tree of Hope,’ it represents community spirit, creativity, and an urgent call for action, all courtesy of local charity Julian House and a talented trio from Petroc College.
Unveiled on November 11th, the tree is adorned with unique baubles crafted by Petroc students Harvey Hogan, Harvey Butler, and Connor Pearce, guided by their lecturer Roger Edgecombe. Each bauble carries a ‘message of hope’ penned by Julian House clients, staff, the Exeter City Council housing team, and members of the public. These heartfelt words serve as a beacon of resilience, compassion, and optimism for anyone pausing to admire the tree’s beauty.
Julian House, a charity devoted to supporting those experiencing or at risk of homelessness, hopes this tree will do more than brighten Princesshay.
It is a centrepiece for their annual Christmas Appeal, launching at a critical moment as homelessness rises sharply across Devon - a sobering 32% increase in rough sleeping reported last year.
“This Christmas tree is more than just a decoration,” said Grace Dearson, Senior Fundraiser for Julian House. “It’s an opportunity to promote compassion, strength, and community support. The handmade baubles and messages of hope are a reminder of the impact each of us can have on the lives of those in need.”
The charity’s call for support couldn’t be timelier. With funding uncertainties looming, Julian House is counting on this year’s appeal to ensure they can continue their life-changing work, from providing safe housing to offering essential services.
This tree isn’t alone in spreading seasonal joy; it joins 34 others in Princesshay, each decorated by a different local charity. Together, they form a forest of goodwill, their collective messages encouraging visitors to pause, reflect, and perhaps give a little extra this holiday season.
The ‘Tree of Hope’ will remain in Princesshay throughout the festive period, offering a moment of peace amid the bustle and a chance to connect with Julian House’s vital mission.
Whether you stop by to admire its intricate baubles or take a moment to read its messages, it’s a reminder of the profound difference kindness can make.
For those inspired to take action, Julian House’s Christmas Appeal is a chance to turn seasonal goodwill into tangible support for some of Devon’s most vulnerable residents. Because, as the ‘Tree of Hope’ shows us, even the smallest gesture of compassion can light up the darkest of times.
