Major safety barrier replacement to begin on M5 between Exeter junctions from May 2026

Overnight lane closures are coming to the M5 between junctions 29 and 31 from 1 May 2026, as National Highways begins a major seven-mile safety barrier replacement programme on one of the South West's busiest stretches of motorway.

National Highways will begin a major programme of safety barrier replacement on the M5 motorway on 1 May 2026, with work taking place between junctions 29 (Sowton) and 31 (Pearce's Hill), the key stretch serving Exeter and the main routes into Devon and Cornwall.

A total of 12,212 metres (7.5 miles) of vehicle restraint system (VRS) barrier will be replaced or newly installed along both the northbound and southbound carriageways, with overnight lane closures running from 1 May 2026 through to May 2027.

The programme carries an overall cost of £5.4 million, funded through a combination of the renewals budget and designated safety funding.

The funding has come from central Government.

As part of the scheme, associated drainage, signage and technology works will also be carried out alongside the barrier replacement.

Why the works are needed

Some existing barriers along this section of the M5 have deteriorated and need renewing to keep road users safe. The scheme also fills a number of nearside gaps with new barrier, ensuring continuous protection along the full stretch.

Will the M5 close?

No, the M5 will stay open throughout. All work is being carried out under overnight lane closures only, with no full carriageway closures planned. The majority of works will take place Sunday to Thursday nights, when traffic is lightest, to minimise disruption for drivers and protect workers on site.

During the day, lanes will normally reopen with temporary barriers left in place where needed. In some cases, where works cannot be safely reopened during daylight hours, temporary barriers and lane closures will remain in place to protect road users from excavations or unfinished sections.

Temporary 50mph speed restrictions will also be in operation on occasion while works are under way.

Slip road closures - what to expect

There will be some overnight and weekend closures of junction slip roads during the programme. All closures will be communicated in advance, with clearly signed short diversion routes in place. Details will be issued progressively as works get under way.

Staying up to date

Advance notice of all lane restrictions, slip road closures, and speed limit changes will be issued once works begin. Drivers using this stretch of the M5 regularly are advised to check for updates and allow extra time during overnight and weekend working periods.
