A Devon landlady who balances running a popular riverside pub with a new career as a children’s author is bringing her "salty old sea dog" tale to Exeter.

Erin Allgrove, the creator of the Bosun Bob series, is set to host a special interactive event at Waterstones Exeter on Tuesday, 7th April.

The session, which begins at 11am, is designed for children aged three and over. It will combine live storytelling from Allgrove’s rhyming books with hands-on nautical craft activities aimed at sparking early years' literacy.

From Pubs to Publishing

Ms Allgrove, who co-owns The Maltsters Arms in Tuckenhay, says her transition from the busy world of hospitality to writing was inspired by her time spent sailing the Devon coast.

"Hospitality has always been a huge part of my life... but living and working by the water really sparked something creative in me," she said.

The series follows the adventures of Bob, inspired by the author’s real-life pet, and his first mate, a clever cat named Pearl. Allgrove says the rhythmic, rhyming prose is intended to make the stories more memorable for young readers.

A 'Year of Reading'

The event comes as part of a wider push to encourage creativity and engagement with books across the county.

"It’s so exciting to see Bosun Bob growing in popularity," Ms Allgrove added. "I’m delighted to be meeting readers this spring close to home in Devon – especially during this very special ‘Year of Reading’."

Families attending the Exeter event can expect:

  • Live readings of Bosun Bob the Salty Old Sea Dog and Bosun Bob and the Cat With No Name.

  • Themed crafts to bring the maritime world to life.

  • Author signings and the chance to discuss the "real" Bob.

The Exeter appearance will be followed by a similar event in Cornwall later in May.
