Devon’s most unique, car-free pub is officially reopening its doors

The team behind the renowned River Exe Cafe is set to take over The Turf, the historic waterside pub on the Exe Estuary Trail, following a series of winter storms that forced the venue to delay its seasonal reopening.

Located in a secluded spot between Exeter and Dawlish, accessible primarily by the Exe Estuary Trail or by boat, the pub has been closed for extensive repairs after being battered by repeated storms.

The new management team, who operate the iconic River Exe Cafe, confirmed they are now working towards an 8 May reopening. They said the venue will not be a "replica" of their other projects, but a bespoke offering designed for the unique geography of the site.

The pub, which sits opposite Topsham, suffered a difficult start to the year. Damage caused by the extreme weather included:

• Infrastructure loss: The venue's marquee was destroyed by high winds.

• Pontoon damage: The boat landing stage was displaced.

• Access issues: Land access to the car park was repeatedly cut off by flooding and debris.

• Environmental impact: A large tree on the site, managed by the RSPB, was brought down.

The management team said they have "never been defeated" by the conditions, using the forced closure to accelerate a major indoor renovation.

Visitors are reminded that The Turf remains a car-free destination. The nearest car park is 0.8 miles away, a 20-minute walk, and offers limited space.

The pub encourages patrons to plan their journey by foot, bicycle, or boat to fully enjoy the scenic Exe Estuary Trail.

While the exterior was struggling with the elements, the team has been redesigning the interior experience. Customers can expect a revamped menu prioritising seasonal food, alongside a new drinks list focusing on local producers.

"Not a replica, not the same, but unique to the beautiful space and location there," the team said in a social media statement.

The operators have advised patrons that the 8 May date is subject to change depending on final preparations, and have urged visitors to check the venue’s social media channels for the latest updates.
