Work is starting on a multi-million pound redevelopment of a historic Exeter green space to create "21st-century" sports facilities.
The King George V playing fields are undergoing a major overhaul led by the Exeter City Community Trust (ECCT) in partnership with Exeter City Council.
The project, which includes a new FIFA-quality 3G pitch and a community orchard, has been bolstered by nearly £2m in external funding.
The site is legally protected by the Fields in Trust charity, which safeguards land established in memory of King George V after his death in 1936.
The first phase of the work is being funded by a £1,997,354 grant from the Football Foundation.
In addition to the all-weather pitch, the money will be used to refurbish the existing pavilion and create two new "PlayZones."
Jamie Vittles, chief executive of ECCT, said the funding brought "serious external investment" into the city.
"We are taking our role as custodians of this valuable green space very seriously," he said.
"This is about creating an accessible and improved space, which meets the requirements of 21st-century lifestyles, whilst preserving a wonderful natural resource."
As part of the plans, 65 new trees will be planted to create a community orchard and provide natural screening for the site.
The new planting will offset the removal of two oak trees which the council said had become unstable or damaged by squirrels.
Historically, parts of the site were used as traditional orchards, and officials say reintroducing fruit trees will help boost local biodiversity.
The council has agreed to lease the fields to the ECCT on a 50-year agreement to ensure the long-term management of the site.
A second phase of the project is expected to include:
Padel courts for racket sports
A community café and social space
Woodland trails and walkways
Upgrades to existing grass pitches
Councillor Duncan Wood, lead member for leisure and healthy living, said the 3G pitch would stop games being lost to bad weather.
"I also welcome the woodland trails and walkways that will be created... for those who simply enjoy walking and being in this beautiful green space," he added.
