Students at Exeter Mathematics School are flourishing academically and personally, according to the latest Ofsted inspection, which has rated the specialist school as outstanding for the third consecutive time.
Exeter Mathematics School, sponsored by Exeter College and the University of Exeter, is the only specialist maths school in the South West.
The report highlights the school’s “exceptional” teaching and support, noting that students benefit not only academically but also in confidence, independence, and interpersonal skills.
Additionally, inspectors said the staff foster a “warm and nurturing” environment, preparing pupils effectively for young adulthood.
The maths school caters to students with a strong interest in mathematics, physics, and computing, providing a tailored sixth-form education in STEM subjects.

Pupils follow rigorous A-level courses, including further maths, take part in extended academic projects at university level, and can study other subjects through Exeter College.
Currently, the school educates 127 pupils from across Devon, Somerset, Dorset, and Cornwall.
The catchment area has recently expanded to include Wiltshire and the greater Bristol region.
Students who live too far to commute can take advantage of the school’s weekday boarding provision, which Ofsted has rated outstanding in all areas.
Inspectors praised the boarding facilities for fostering independence while maintaining a strong focus on safety and well-being.
Pupils reported feeling secure and supported, and highlighted how boarding life helps them develop life skills, manage responsibilities, and build positive relationships.
Parents echoed these views, describing the boarding environment as “nurturing” and exceeding expectations.
“It’s a very nurturing environment that promotes independence, whilst keeping students safe,” a parent told inspectors.
Ofsted specifically commended the school’s safeguarding culture and the leadership of boarding staff, noting that teachers are “passionate about the care they provide” and maintain “an exceptional standard of support for students.”
Inspectors also highlighted the meaningful relationships staff build with pupils, which students said were a key part of their positive experience.
“We enjoy boarding and feel safe because of the support around us,” one student told inspectors.
“The staff help us develop life skills and independence – it’s more than just studying,” another pupil added.
Headteacher Kerry Burnham said the school was proud of both its students and staff.
“We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the dedication of our staff and the achievements of our pupils. Boarding life at Exeter Mathematics School allows students to care for each other while developing independence and resilience,” she said.
Kerry also highlighted the school’s expanding reach:“We are excited about expanding our catchment area across the West of England and hope to secure government support for new boarding facilities in the future.”
The report underlines how Exeter Mathematics School combines high-level academic teaching with personal development, giving students a unique environment to pursue STEM subjects while gaining skills that extend beyond the classroom.
For many students, the school represents not just an educational opportunity but a chance to grow in a supportive, academically focused community.
Exeter Mathematics School remains a unique resource for the region, attracting students who are passionate about maths, physics, and computing, and providing an environment designed to nurture both academic excellence and personal growth.
