A popular festive attraction at Powderham Castle near Exeter was brought to an early close on December 18 as a precaution due to rising water levels following heavy rainfall.

The Christmas at The Castle event closed early after water levels increased at the entrance and exit to the site. The decision was taken due to the heavy rain experienced throughout the week and Powderham Castle’s proximity to the tidal River Exe.

Organisers said the closure was carried out calmly and safely in line with established safety protocols. No injuries were reported, and the site reopened as normal the following morning.

Christmas at The Castle is a festive light event held across the castle and its grounds, where visitors can explore rooms and pathways transformed for the season. The attraction features twinkling lights, festive displays and Christmas music, with each area carefully dressed to celebrate the festive season.

A spokesperson for Powderham Castle said that while organisers were disappointed to cut short visitors’ experiences, the safety of everyone on site remained the highest priority.

They thanked staff for their quick response and visitors for their cooperation and understanding.

The Powderham Castle team is now contacting those who were on site on December 18 to arrange an alternative date for them to return.

Christmas at The Castle has since reopened and is operating as normal, subject to weather and site conditions.
