Visitors to Exeter city centre may have spotted a more visible police presence this week, as officers carried out high-profile patrols around key areas, including Cathedral Green, where the Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market will soon return.

The operation, part of Devon and Cornwall Police’s #ProjectServator initiative, saw both uniformed and plain-clothed officers working alongside city centre security teams and CCTV operators to deter crime and reassure the public.

A police spokesperson said the deployments are designed to keep everyone safe as the festive season begins: “Project Servator officers are specially trained to spot unusual or suspicious behaviour.”

“We work closely with our partners and local businesses to ensure Exeter remains a safe and welcoming place for all - particularly as Christmas events draw more people into the city.”

The proactive patrols took place across several busy areas, including the Cathedral Green, which will soon transform into a festive hub for the Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market, and Princesshay, where the Christmashay Village and Christmas Market open later this month.

Residents are reminded that if they see something that doesn’t feel right, they should report it to police or security staff immediately.

With the return of Exeter’s much-loved Christmas markets, late-night shopping and festive lights, the city centre is expected to welcome thousands of visitors in the coming weeks, and police say community vigilance will help keep the celebrations safe and enjoyable for everyone.
