Pupils from Exwick Heights Primary School had the chance to step back in time during a school trip to Kents Cavern, one of Europe’s most significant prehistoric sites.
The visit brought classroom lessons on Stone Age Britain to life, allowing children to explore the caves and surrounding woodland while learning about early human life.
During the trip, pupils discovered how the limestone caves were formed millions of years ago and uncovered clues about the people who once lived there.

The children even handled a genuine Stone Age handaxe, giving them a hands-on experience of archaeology.
Headteacher Gemma Wills said the trip was “an incredible experience” for the pupils. “They loved exploring the caves, learning about prehistoric life, and even handling a real Stone Age handaxe. It’s moments like these that make history come alive and inspire curiosity and critical thinking in our children.”
The visit is part of Exwick Heights’ wider approach to teaching history through immersive experiences. As part of the Ted Wragg Trust, the school encourages pupils to explore Britain’s past and the wider world, connecting classroom learning with real-world discoveries.
Moira Marder, CEO of the Ted Wragg Trust, added: “The visit to Kents Cavern gave students a tangible connection to history, sparking their imagination and helping them see the relevance of the past in today’s world.”
Trips like these aim to inspire young people in Exeter to engage with history, develop critical thinking skills, and foster a lifelong curiosity about the world around them.
