Exeter Cathedral is opening its doors this week for the Autumn Fair, offering visitors the chance to explore local independent businesses against the backdrop of one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

The event runs on Tuesday 14 October from 6.30pm to 9pm and Wednesday 15 October from 10am to 3.30pm.

The fair features a wide range of artisan products, including handcrafted jewellery, clothing, ceramics, stoneware, and other handmade crafts, as well as locally produced food and drink.

Entry to the cathedral is free during the fair, allowing attendees to admire its 14th-century stone vaulted ceiling (the longest continuous medieval stone vault in the world) and the peaceful atmosphere of the Quire.

Visitors can also take a break in the Refectory, where ethically sourced refreshments are available. Those with pre-booked adult tickets can enjoy a complimentary glass of mulled wine during their visit. Tickets can be booked online through the cathedral’s website.

Local resident, Emma Carter, said she enjoys the fair every year: “I love coming to the Autumn Fair, it’s a great chance to support small businesses and find unique gifts. The cathedral is such a beautiful setting; it makes browsing the stalls feel really special.”

University of Exeter student, Jack Thompson, also praised the event: “It’s a brilliant way to get involved in the local community and see what independent traders have to offer. I come every year with friends. The mix of food, crafts and the cathedral setting makes it really different from other markets in the city.”

The cathedral’s events team described the fair as a long-standing tradition that celebrates local talent: “The Autumn Fair is a wonderful showcase of Exeter and the Cathedral. For nearly 10 years this event has been a chance for independent traders, artisans and producers to showcase their talent in one of the city’s most iconic settings.

“As well as getting ahead with Christmas presents, visitors can also expect to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes at the Cathedral with demos and stalls from our Stonemasons, Library and Archives, Tapisers and more!”

The Autumn Fair at Exeter Cathedral will run across two days, giving visitors the chance to browse local stalls and discover more about the cathedral’s work.
