Hilltop Riding School in Exeter is celebrating its 55th anniversary, marking more than half a century of teaching people to ride and care for horses.

Founded in 1969 by Janet Portberry, the school has grown from a single pony to a thriving riding centre with stables, a strong team of instructors, and a dedicated community of riders and volunteers.

Janet, the founder of Hilltop Riding School, recalls the school’s humble beginnings: “I started it in 1969, working with a lady who had a young daughter who wanted to learn how to ride. I bought a pony and that’s what started the school.”

Over the years, Janet has built up the site, developed the stables, and guided riders to national competitions. “It means a lot. I started it from scratch, I built it up to be what it is today. I wanted to celebrate the 50th birthday, but that’s when COVID struck. Hopefully, I’ll make it to the 60th one,” she said.

The school prides itself on high teaching standards and long-standing traditions. Horses at Hilltop have a “home for life,” and the care and welfare of each animal is a priority.

Elaine James, a volunteer at the stables, said: “It’s a testament to Janet’s passion for the horses. They are cared for by Janet and the team and get a whole lot of love from the volunteers.”

Hilltop Riding School is also a community hub.

Families often return year after year, some with children who have grown up at the school. Volunteers help run events, provide guidance, and support the day-to-day care of the horses.

“It’s a community. You volunteer, you make friends, you bond with the horses. It’s more than a riding school,” Elaine added.

Looking to the future, Janet wants to continue the school’s work and expand the land available.

“The plan is to keep it going as it is and get people to enjoy and love horses. Hopefully, we can offer more things to families,” she said.

Janet also took the opportunity to thank the school’s supporters: “To thank them for all of their support.”

Hilltop Riding School will continue its regular events, with the next gathering set for Halloween.
