Exeter Cathedral will be the focal point of a torchlit procession led by the Mediaeval Baebes on Saturday 6th December. The event, starting at 6.50pm from H&M on the High Street, will feature musicians, reenactors, and members of the public carrying lanterns and walking alongside the performers.

The procession will include a ceremonial lighting of a chalice and will wind through the city, ending at the cathedral entrance. Participants are encouraged to join with lanterns, drums, or costumes, though spectators can also watch from the street.

The Mediaeval Baebes, known for their harmonies and use of historical instruments, will perform traditional folk songs and Christmas carols as part of the procession. The group will also highlight the folklore and meanings behind the songs, with selections drawn from their forthcoming album, The Spinning Wheel, which marks their 30th anniversary.

The ensemble has a long history of recognition in early music, with eleven studio albums, an Ivor Novello Award, and two Emmy nominations. Their music has also been featured on television soundtracks and collaborative projects, including a 2023 remix album with The Wellermen and Orbital.

The procession in Exeter is part of their seasonal performances and offers the public a chance to engage with music, theatre, and historical pageantry ahead of Christmas.

Tickets for associated concerts are available from the Mediaeval Baebes’ website, with prices set at £32.50 for adults and £15 for children.
