The South West’s real heroes revealed

From posties braving the elements to bus drivers lending a hand with shopping bags, new research has revealed the quiet, everyday heroes at the heart of South West communities.

A survey of 2,000 adults across the UK, carried out by Stagecoach, found that while celebrities and politicians often grab headlines, it’s ordinary people performing small acts of kindness who hold neighbourhoods together.

In the South West, the “postie who never skips a house” topped the list of unsung heroes, while bus drivers were also praised, with 57% of respondents saying they make a real difference by being a friendly face on daily journeys. Almost two-thirds (59%) believe there’s a strong sense of community in their area, yet 71% say many of the region’s true heroes go unnoticed.

Volunteers, young carers, caretakers and cleaners were among those highlighted as under-appreciated, despite the vital role they play in everyday life. Checking in on elderly neighbours (61%), always offering a friendly hello (47%) and being the person others can rely on in a pinch (40%) were identified as the top qualities that make someone a pillar of their community.

Peter Knight, Managing Director at Stagecoach South West, said: “Friendly posties, bus drivers and school crossing guards have been the backbone of happy communities for generations. They’re the ones making the small acts of kindness that have a big impact. These humble heroes don’t seek the spotlight, but without them life in towns and cities would be far less connected and less human.”

The study also revealed how recognition has shifted in recent years, with nearly half (47%) believing genuine community heroes often go unnoticed if they lack an online presence.
