Smartphones could be banned from September 2026
Devon councillors will next week debate whether to back a plan to ban smartphones in all the county’s primary and secondary schools from September 2026.
The proposal is one of several motions on the agenda at the Full Council meeting on Thursday 4 September at County Hall, Exeter.
Supporters say the move would help cut distraction in classrooms, protect children’s mental health and tackle online bullying. But critics argue a blanket ban could be hard to enforce and risks punishing responsible pupils.
The controversial idea will be discussed alongside other motions, including rolling out more 20mph speed limits, cracking down on food waste, giving rivers legal rights, and declaring zero tolerance for hate crime.
Councillors will vote on whether to debate the proposals on the day or pass them to Cabinet for further consideration.
The meeting kicks off at 10.30am at County Hall, Exeter, and will be streamed live on the council's website.
