Budleigh Salterton is gearing up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its much-loved music festival, which kicked yesterday (June 27) with an impressive programme of world-class classical and contemporary performances.
Under the artistic direction of Jason Thornton, the festival promises 20 unmissable concerts showcasing a blend of internationally renowned stars and exceptional emerging talent, all taking place in the heart of East Devon.
The festival opens with a spectacular performance by the Band of HM Royal Marines Plymouth alongside saxophone sensation Jess Gillam. The celebrations culminate on July 5 with a joyful Family Day, featuring interactive workshops, a musical treasure hunt, and a vibrant evening concert by the London African Gospel Choir performing their iconic Graceland set.
This landmark year includes headline events such as a rare South West appearance from Sir Stephen Hough, fresh from the Last Night of the Proms, and the return of the Armonico Consort with Rachmaninov’s breathtaking Vespers.
Other highlights include a poignant rendition of Carnival of the Animals by author Sir Michael Morpurgo and cellist Clare O’Connell, featuring British Sign Language interpretation, and a recital of Mahler’s Symphony No.1 for piano four hands by rising stars from Budapest’s Liszt Academy.
Music lovers can also look forward to a tavern-style concert by ZRI blending Schubert with folk influences, a compelling all-American evening with Bath Philharmonia and pianist Zeynep Ozsuca, and a showcase from 20-year-old violin virtuoso Guido Saint’Anna, hailed as a global rising star.
Kate Somerby, chair of Budleigh Music Festival, urged audiences to book quickly: “Several headline events have already sold out or are nearing capacity. This promises to be a wonderful festival – a true celebration of music and community.”
New for 2025, Family Day on July 5 offers a joyful musical experience for just £5 per person. The event runs from 10.30am to 3.15pm, with a range of workshops including global percussion with Drum Devon, handbell ringing with Ottery Ringers, body percussion led by STOMP alumnus Ollie Tunmer, and a relaxing gong bath.
Families can explore Budleigh Salterton with a musical treasure hunt in partnership with Shop Budleigh, collecting stamps from local businesses before joining a lively finale with Jason Thornton and a prize draw celebration.
Kate added, “Our Family Day is the perfect way to introduce new generations to the joy of live music, alongside relaxed concerts and community performances that welcome everyone.”
