Teignmouth update: Royal Navy team en route

The cordon around Teignmouth beach has been reduced as the Royal Navy prepares to assess a suspected piece of ordnance found in the sand

Teignmouth alert: Royal Navy team en route

The emergency cordon in Teignmouth has been reduced from 200 metres to 100 metres, following the discovery of a suspected piece of ordnance on the beach earlier today (24 May).

Den Crescent is now being reopened, and officers have confirmed that the Royal Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team will attend the scene in the early evening to carry out a full assessment of the item.

The item was found in the sand near Teignmouth Pier this morning, prompting a large safety perimeter and the evacuation of nearby cafés and properties as a precaution.

Devon & Cornwall Police are continuing to ask members of the public to stay clear of the immediate area while emergency services remain on site.

Further updates will be provided once the Navy team has assessed the object.
