Bomb disposal called to Teignmouth beach

A 200-metre cordon has been set up in Teignmouth after a suspected piece of unexploded ordnance was discovered in the sand on Friday morning (24 May).

The precautionary safety zone covers Teignmouth Pier, nearby cafés, and surrounding properties, which are currently being evacuated. Devon & Cornwall Police say officers are engaging directly with those affected and are urging the public to avoid the area while the item is assessed.

“Please steer clear of the area while emergency services are in attendance,” a police spokesperson said. “We will keep you updated in due course.”

Emergency services, including bomb disposal experts, are at the scene. As a precaution, access to parts of the beach and nearby businesses is restricted until further notice.

A cordon is a controlled perimeter established by emergency services to keep the public at a safe distance from a potential hazard - in this case, a suspected explosive device. It ensures the safety of both responders and the public while an investigation or disposal operation is carried out.

Further updates are expected later today as the situation develops.
