St Petrock’s launches Big Night Out fundraiser

Community event aims to tackle rising homelessness in Exeter

St Petrock’s launches Big Night Out fundraiser

Exeter’s homelessness charity, St Petrock’s, is calling on the community to take part in The Big Night Out, a fundraising event designed to raise awareness and support for those experiencing homelessness in the city.

With between 25 and 40 people sleeping rough in and around Exeter on any given night - and many more facing hidden homelessness in emergency accommodation, garages, cars, and sheds - demand for St Petrock’s services is at an all-time high.

The Big Night Out will take place on Friday, 25 April 2024, marking the charity’s 30th anniversary and providing much-needed funds to continue its vital work.

Emma Jones, Community Relations Manager at St Petrock’s, explained the importance of the event:
“The number of people sleeping rough in our city is sadly rising again, placing more pressure on our services. By taking part in the Big Night Out, people can make a real difference to those who find themselves without a roof over their heads.”

Participants are encouraged to swap their beds for one night and sleep in a garden, workplace, shed, garage, or car, inviting friends and family to join them in solidarity with those experiencing homelessness.

While it does not replicate the trauma of rough sleeping, the event raises awareness of the realities many face while generating essential funds for St Petrock’s outreach and support services.

St Petrock’s Chief Executive, Peter Stephenson, highlighted the urgency of the fundraiser:
“When St Petrock’s was founded, the hope was that homelessness would soon be eradicated. Instead, we are needed more than ever. Rough sleeping in Exeter has reached record levels, with nearly 40 people on the streets some nights. Charities are feeling the squeeze, so public support is absolutely vital.”

Founded in 1995, St Petrock’s has been a cornerstone of support for Exeter’s rough sleepers, providing daytime shelter, hot food, clothing, emotional support, housing assistance, and essential health services.

Last year, the charity supported around 350 rough sleepers, working to help individuals rebuild their lives.

As part of the 30th-anniversary celebrations, St Petrock’s is planning additional fundraising activities, including a sponsored walk, auction, and a staff skydive, all aimed at raising awareness and funds for homelessness services in Exeter.

Those interested in participating in The Big Night Out can sign up here, where they will receive an information pack on how to take part safely and maximise fundraising efforts. Donations can also be made via the St Petrock’s website.
