Exeter Northcott Theatre has announced an exciting new initiative to support the next generation of theatre makers emerging from the University of Exeter.
As part of its Elevate artist development programme, the Northcott will reserve one Associate Artist slot exclusively for a graduating or recently graduated theatre company from the university, starting in September 2025.
The chosen company will receive a full year of bespoke support designed to help them transition from university into the professional world.
Benefits include free rehearsal space, artistic and administrative support from the Northcott’s experienced team, platforms to share their work, and access to free or discounted tickets.
Sam Parker, Artist Development Producer at Exeter Northcott, highlighted the importance of supporting young talent:
“Exeter University has an incredible track record of producing theatre companies who make important contributions to the South-West arts ecology. By reserving an associateship for a graduating company, we hope to do our bit to ensure that the exciting artists coming through university pathways remain in the South West upon completing their studies.”
This move reflects the Northcott’s commitment to nurturing local artists at all stages of their careers, building on the appointment of five new Elevate Associates in October 2024 and the launch of the Elevate programme earlier that year.
The University of Exeter’s Drama department has welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm. Dr Adrian Curtin, Head of Subject for Drama, described the partnership as a key step in bridging the gap between education and the professional arts world:
“We are delighted and excited that the Northcott is making their Associate scheme available to Exeter Drama graduates. This scheme will enable graduates to launch their professional careers as theatre makers and consolidates a partnership between Exeter Drama and the Northcott which we are hoping to build on in the future.”
The partnership between the Northcott and the University of Exeter is a long-standing one, with many graduates already making waves in the theatre world. This Christmas, the Northcott is co-producing *The Elves and the Shoemaker* at its Barnfield Theatre venue in collaboration with PaddleBoat Theatre Company, a graduate company formed at the university.
Reflecting on the value of such support, PaddleBoat Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, Katy Dash, shared her experience:
“Sticking around in Exeter was the best thing for us and our company. We had spent three years at uni getting to know the local arts ecology. Once we graduated, we had so much invaluable support from the University and local arts associates programmes such as the Northcott’s, which allowed us to grow our company in the real world. Ten years later and we’re still working in partnership, bringing quality theatre to young audiences across the South West.”
By reserving a place for University of Exeter graduates in its Elevate programme, the Northcott is ensuring that the South West remains a fertile ground for emerging theatre talent.
