South West Water is travelling across Devon and Cornwall to help educate schoolchildren about the importance of water.
Throughout the last academic year, South West Water’s Community Engagement Officer, Sophie Moore, has visited 76 schools across the region, giving lessons to over 6,000 children.
With a focus on showcasing just how precious water is, Sophie has helped children understand more about where their water comes from, the challenges in storing and treating it, and what small steps they can take at school and home to conserve this vital resource and protect the environment.
Each class is divided into five key topics tailored to meet different students' needs.
The topics include water efficiency, drinking water, wastewater, the environment, and wellbeing.
All lessons emphasise the central message that water is a precious resource, and everyone has a role in protecting it.
Sophie said: “Travelling the beautiful Southwest region and seeing all of the kids listen, learn, and engage in my lessons is truly rewarding.
“Knowing that I may just inspire a future generation to continue to save water and have a better appreciation of the work that goes into getting it from the sky to their tap is what gets me up and going each morning.”
A teacher from Mylor Bridge Primary School in Falmouth, where Sophie recently visited, said: “It has been an absolute pleasure welcoming Sophie into our class. She is incredibly efficient, flexible, and plans the lessons with our support well in advance, ensuring that her topics work with what we are teaching the children in science already.
“Sophie’s lessons are extremely well delivered and pitched perfectly for our year four students. As well as having great behaviour management of young kids, she always engages each pupil and adds a good helping of fun and humour which the children love.”
To show their gratitude to Sophie, the students at Mylor Bridge compiled a handmade scrap for Sophie to take home with her.
