The Met Office has issued amber and yellow weather warnings across Great Britain until Sunday, December 8, as Storm Darragh brings a mix of heavy rain, strong winds, and snow, expected to cause significant travel disruptions across various regions.
Severe disruptions are expected in parts of the South West and Cornwall, with train services likely to experience delays, cancellations, and other issues due to the adverse conditions.
Great Western Railway (GWR) has advised customers to review their travel plans ahead of the storm, particularly as speed restrictions and potential debris may impact services.
GWR expects to continue running trains, but delays are likely due to the high winds. There will also be restrictions on speeds, increasing journey times.
Customers with tickets for travel on Saturday, December 7, and Sunday, December 8, can use their tickets on Monday, December 9, if they choose not to travel this weekend.
Additionally, passengers can request a full refund if they no longer wish to travel by visiting the GWR website. The company recommends checking with event organizers, as some events, like the Exeter Christmas Market, have already been cancelled today.
Networks that may impact your journey include:
Heavy rain and high winds can lead to track flooding, landslips, and potential damage to points and signalling equipment, which could delay or halt services. Speed restrictions and track maintenance may also be introduced as a precaution.
Rail passengers are strongly advised to check real-time journey planners via National Rail Enquiries for the latest updates. If you experience a delay, you may be entitled to compensation - ensure to keep your train ticket and journey details as proof for any claims.
Despite the weather challenges, Taunton station is welcoming a new addition to its facilities - a Centenary Lounge café, offering visitors a taste of the 1930s.
This café, located on Platform 2, celebrates the rich history of the Great Western Railway and the golden age of rail travel.
Designed with Art Deco features and inspired by the station’s heritage, the café serves as a tribute to the past while providing a modern, welcoming space for both travellers and locals.
Lord Faulkner of Worcester and GWR Business Assurance and Strategy Director, Joe Graham, expressed their enthusiasm for the café’s opening, with Lord Faulkner saying:
"Railways are all about connecting people, whether that is for work, for education, or for leisure. They bring people together, and station waiting rooms and refreshment rooms are part of that heritage." Joe Graham added, "We’re delighted to welcome Centenary Lounge to Taunton and are thrilled they’ve been able to recreate so many of the station’s original features in this stunning new café."
This revision maintains the core sentiment but accurately reflects their statements.
Taunton station has undergone significant improvements over the last five years, with major upgrades including a new ticket office, enhanced station entrance, and better bus and taxi interchange facilities.
As Storm Darragh continues to impact travel plans across the country, passengers are reminded to plan ahead, stay updated, and check for any changes to services.
