Powderham Food Festival is returning this weekend, and it promises to showcase some of the finest food and drink in the South West.
The annual food festival takes place across two days, on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 of October, between 10am and 5pm.
The event is held on the grounds of Powderham Castle, a mediaeval estate in Exminster that has always revolved around eating and producing food.
Built in 1391, the castle is home to the Courtenay family and the current Earl of Devon.
It was one of the last fortifications designed more to display power and wealth than to serve as a defensive stronghold.
Today, the castle welcomes visitors daily, except on Sundays, and also serves as a popular wedding venue.
Even if you've never stepped foot on the grounds, you might recognise Powderham’s 300-year-old deer park, which is easily visible from the Riviera train line.
This weekend, visitors can enjoy a variety of local delicacies, including the renowned Powderham venison sausages, available at the Powderham Farm Shop and Bistro.
Over 100 food and drink producers from across Devon and beyond will be in attendance, offering everything from quality meat (Pipers Farm) artisanal cheeses (Quickes Cheese) and handcrafted breads to award-winning ciders, locally distilled gin (Thunderflower Gin), and craft beers (Bay Brewery).
There will also be live cooking demonstrations, offering inspiration to home cooks and aspiring foodies alike.
It is an ideal family event, with a range of activities including face painting, wall climbing, live music, and the ever-popular chilli eating challenge.
Heritage manager at Powderham Castle, Derry Tydeman, said: “Powderham Castle provides the perfect location for local producers to showcase their craftsmanship each year. We’re delighted to host such a talented roster of local businesses for our community to experience the very best food, drink, and entertainment our region has to offer. We can't wait to welcome everyone for a weekend of delicious discoveries!"
Tickets, which are £5 for adults and free for Powderham members and under 16s, include entry into the castle so you can enjoy the full experience.
