The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has been named the top-performing trust in the South West for inpatient experience, according to the latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) Adult Inpatient Survey (2024), published on Tuesday 9 September 2025.

The national survey gathers feedback from patients aged 16 and over about their hospital stays, covering everything from admission and treatment to communication, cleanliness, and discharge.

More than 500 Royal Devon patients shared their views, and the trust ranked first in eight out of 11 key areas of patient experience, making it the leading trust in the region.

Patients highlighted particularly positive experiences in being treated with kindness and compassion, feeling respected and dignified, having trust in doctors, the cleanliness of wards, consistent communication, and the overall quality of care.

While the trust scored above the national average across the board, areas for improvement included reducing ward noise, clearer communication around discharge, and more support with dietary needs.

Teams are already working on plans to improve these aspects.

A spokesperson for the Royal Devon said the Trust is “extremely proud” of the results and grateful to patients who shared their experiences.
