Ireland international and Exeter Chiefs flanker Dorothy Wall has called on Exeter fans to get behind her teammates as Sandy Park prepares to host a blockbuster Women’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final this Sunday.
Ireland reached the last eight with wins over Japan and Spain and moments of brilliance against tournament favourites New Zealand.
But France arrived unbeaten and full of confidence, setting the stage for a thrilling encounter.
The fixture has strong Exeter ties, with Chiefs players Nanay McGillivray, Edel ‘Tricky’ McMahon and Cliodhna Moloney-MacDonald all in the Irish squad.
Exeter also has a long-standing connection with France, being twinned with the city of Rennes since 1956.
Dorothy Wall, 25, is sidelined with an Achilles injury but has been cheering her side on from the stands.
Speaking in Exeter city centre on Thursday, she urged locals to join the crowd at Sandy Park.
“I’m so excited. Seeing Ireland qualify after missing out on the last World Cup is really historic,” she said.
“It’s important that people get behind us, not just in Ireland but here in Exeter too. The Irish girls at the Chiefs would love that local support.”
Dorothy said fans can expect much more than just rugby: “The girls always give their time to fans. Sandy Park is such a special stadium – you’re right on top of the action. It’ll be an incredible weekend.”
Tickets for both Exeter quarter-finals are still available at tickets.rugbyworldcup.com.
