Dog-friendly Exeter is in the lead

The city’s scenic setting makes it a great destination for dog owners

Exeter is officially one of the most dog-friendly holiday destinations anywhere in the UK, according to new research.

The study carried out by outdoors retailer Millets is no shaggy dog story – it’s based on a range of factors including the welcome given by bars, restaurants and hotels to our four-legged friends as well as the number of outdoor trails, dog groomers and vets in and around the city.

Exeter was revealed as the second most dog-friendly UK holiday destination, behind only Carlisle.

The judges said: “Though a small city, Exeter is a vibrant place with many historical attractions. The city’s scenic setting makes it a great destination to visit with your four-legged companion throughout the year.

“Exeter is also a top location with plenty of dog-friendly bars and pubs, including Double Locks, a traditional country pub with a huge beer garden and plenty of dog treats.”

The top 10 list was:

Carlisle
Exeter
Preston
Sterling
Norwich
Worcester
Gloucester
Plymouth
Lancaster
Chester
