People may not realise just how many notable celebrities have early links to Exeter. Here are some of the famous people who were born or lived in the Devon capital.

Chris Martin

Perhaps one of the most internationally recognized figures from Exeter is Chris Martin, the lead singer of the globally acclaimed band Coldplay. Born in Exeter in 1977, Chris attended the prestigious Exeter Cathedral School before moving on to Sherborne School in Dorset. Coldplay, formed in 1996, has achieved massive success worldwide and have recently become the first band to headline Glastonbury festival five times. Chris has credited his upbringing in the city for influencing his music.

J.K. Rowling

Before finding fame through the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling spent her formative years in the Exeter area. She attended the University of Exeter, where she studied French and Classics. Though fans once speculated that The Old Fire House in Exeter may have inspired the Leaky Cauldron in her books, Ms Rowling has since denied this claim.

Tommy Cooper

British comedian and magician, Tommy Cooper, also has connections to Exeter. Born in Caerphilly, Wales, in 1921, Tommy’s family moved to Exeter when he was a young boy. He attended Mount Radford School in the city. Known for his distinctive comedic style and catchphrase, "Just like that," Tommy was celebrated in the UK for his slapstick humour and magic tricks.

Matt Bellamy

Another prominent musician from Exeter is Matt Bellamy, the lead vocalist, guitarist, and pianist for the rock band Muse. Matt was born in Cambridge but moved to Teignmouth during his childhood. He attended Teignmouth Community College, where he met his future bandmates. Muse has since achieved international fame with their dynamic sound and theatrical live performances, earning a dedicated global fanbase.

Michael Caines

Exeter is also home to culinary excellence, thanks in part to Michael Caines, one of Britain’s most celebrated chefs. Born in Exeter in 1969, the celebrity chef has achieved numerous accolades throughout his career, including two Michelin stars during his tenure at Gidleigh Park. He has been a prominent figure in the UK’s culinary scene, known for his innovative approach to modern European cuisine. He also owns the luxury hotel and restaurant Lympstone Manor, which overlooks the Exe Estuary and Jurassic Coast.

William Temple

A notable historical figure from Exeter is William Temple, who served as the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1942 until his death in 1944. Born in Exeter in 1881, Mr Temple was an influential religious leader and theologian, known for his progressive views on social justice and education. His work had a significant impact on the Church of England and British society during a tumultuous period in history.

Caroline Lucas

Caroline Lucas, the prominent Green Party politician and former Member of Parliament for Brighton Pavilion, was born in Malvern but raised in Exeter. She attended Exeter School and later the University of Exeter, where she became involved in environmental activism. Ms Lucas has been a leading voice for green politics in the UK, advocating for sustainable development and climate action.
